Philosophy

As reflected in its name, the Kalpa Group has a particular interest in research projects that synthesise and integrate ancient ideas with contemporary applications. Kalpa views technology as an essential tool for understanding the past, rather than as a different and more ‘advanced’ form of human activity. It therefore takes a special interest in projects that apply scientific technology to the investigation of topics in the humanities, and that bring together experts from disparate fields.

It is the spirit of the quest that best defines Kalpa Group’s projects, along with the highest standards of professional excellence, the use of the most scientifically advanced technology and an open-ended outcome. These criteria ensure the participation of Kalpa in some of the world's most extraordinary investigations. For example, Kalpa believes that some ancient medical practices remain valid today, and is funding scientific research to test their efficacy and applicability to modern medicine. Likewise, amongst some ancient religions, there are practices that appear to have substantive mental and physical benefits to adherents, and which Kalpa-funded projects are investigating.

The Kalpa Group concentrates on long-term projects in the fields of anthropology, religion, exploration and the arts. To date, it has funded research and exploration in Tibet, Nepal, Italy, the United States, and the Far East. The Group often assumes a strictly charitable function, providing no-strings financial support. In particular, the group will consider projects that are considered too risky by underwriters wanting a guaranteed outcome. For Kalpa, a degree of uncertainty and serendipity adds depth, beauty and possibility to the investigative process.

The Kalpa Group has a deep commitment to supporting the welfare and continuity of communities where these ancient traditions are still practised. It is Kalpa's intention to serve these traditions on their home ground, providing them with the autonomy to which they are entitled.
An important proviso of a Kalpa project is that the results be made widely available. After the successful conclusion of a project, Kalpa will often provide further funding to ensure the widespread dissemination of results, through books, articles, documentary films, DVDs and so forth.
